Our History
Range Disposal Service was established in 1976 when former owner, Ray Woods, returned to his hometown and purchased D&D Sanitation. At that time D& D was a one truck business with 215 total customers in the town of Deerwood, Deerwood and Irondale Townships.
The motto” Dependable garbage service at a reasonable price” was adopted and is still in effect today. A dependable service was something D& D had failed to provide.
With his knowledge of the area and the people, the business began to grow almost immediately. Since those first months, Range Disposal has experienced steady growth and continues to grow today by adhering to the first and only motto by providing a “Dependable garbage service at a reasonable price.”
As our residential base grew the first truck was replaced by one that was larger and could tip rear load containers and Range expanded into the commercial field. With the purchase of a high compaction truck in 1986 and acquiring a small satellite truck that dumped into the larger one, we were able to service newly purchased routes in South Long Lake and Nokay Lake Townships and the City of Emily.
As the business continued to grow, son-in law Jim Wynn joined the firm. The former Kagle Truck shop was also purchased to insure the trucks would be ready to work during our harsh winters and we could work on and maintain the equipment. In the office, more customers meant adding computers and software to handle the billing.
Further growth called for another truck and son Alan Woods joined the firm on a full time status, but he has always been a part of the company since he was a teenager and he operated the satellite truck once he was able to drive and was instrumental in the continued growth of this company!. The office was moved from Ray’s home and into a remodeled space in Jim’s home next to the shop and daughter Shellie joined Sharon in the office.
On May 1, 2005 Range Disposal became owned and operated by Alan Woods and Jim Wynn. Jim’s wife Shellie is fully in charge of the office, and former owner, Ray Woods, has been retained in a consulting position. Ray’s wife Sharon still fills in at the office when needed.
Our owners have always been involved in the community, be it with Lions clubs, local committees or fire protection.
Range Disposal has prided itself on innovation in the refuse business. The use of the satellite truck was the first in the county and we were the first to offer our customers a volume priced alterative by choosing a 1, 2 or 3 can option.
This volume pricing is now a State mandate requiring all haulers and local governments that collect solid waste “shall implement charges that increase as the volume or weight of the waste collected on-site from each generator’s residence or place of business” re: 115A.9301 Solid Waste Collection; Volume – or Weight Bases Pricing. Subd 1
All measures were taken by Range Disposal so we could keep our costs and the monthly charge to our customers down. Cost savings to our customers now include containers provided free to all businesses we serve and refuse carts to all residential customers.
Municipal Clients
In 1988 Range Disposal reached an agreement with Wolford Township. Under this agreement persons living in the township pay only one half of the monthly service charge for weekly refuse collection, with Wolford Township paying the other half. This agreement is still in force today
Range Disposal is proud to say it was selected in 1994 to provide organized collection for the City of Crosby. This was the first organized collection contract in Crow Wing County. Service started in October of 1994 and is still in effect today.
We have learned many things over the past 39 years, some through trial and error, about operating an efficient and cost effective means of refuse collection for the residents of Crow Wing Count and feel it is an advantage to have this experience as part of our history.
Range Disposal Service has built an excellent reputation in the refuse business, has experience in organized collection and being a family owned and operated local hauler give us the advantage of knowing the cities and townships in our service area and is key in providing a refuse service that would satisfy all their needs.
Our motto is THE SMALL COMPANY THAT’S BIG ON SERVICE
